Grant Application Guidelines

The George and Fay Young Foundation, Inc. is a private, not for profit corporation. In all its dealings with the public, it is the Foundation's intent to be accessible, objective, cordial and professional. The policy of the Foundation is to issue grants only to organizations which are (i) exempt from federal income taxation under Section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended (the "Code"); (ii) described in Code Section 501(c)(3); and (iii) not classified as a private foundation described in Code Section 509(a). Grants are not made to individuals.

Areas of Focus:

Education

• Scholarship: traditional/non-traditional programs providing students with greater opportunities toward advancement.
• Arts and Culture: hands on programs using art as a catalyst for learning and inspiration.
• Environmental Advocacy: programs promoting preservation of the environment and its natural resources.

Individual, Family, & Community Intervention

• Domestic Violence: programs working to break destructive cycles and promote positive change.
• At Risk Populations: fostering self-reliance for indigent individuals and families, equipping them with skills and knowledge to create healthy and successful lives.

Animal Rescue and Awareness

• Support for shelters, abuse, interventions, veterinary assistance and service animals.

Healthcare

• Programs Supporting; Mental and Physical aid to individuals unable to provide proper care for themselves or family members.

 

The Foundation traditionally focuses on organizations operating within the Dallas/ Ft. Worth Metroplex. The Foundation, will however, give consideration to organizations located in other parts of Texas as well as throughout the United States that represent the areas of focus listed above.

The Foundation makes every effort to be receptive to all eligible applicants and considers requests of any amount. Gifts exceeding $50,000 may be considered for multi-year status to be given over a 3-year period.

The Foundation focuses on the following when considering an application:

• The proposed project or program is well planned.
• The proposal is novel and proficient in its use of funds.
• Reasons or ways that the Foundation's support is vital to the proposed project and its success.
• Visible community involvement.
• Evidence of the project's or program's accomplishments. (What percentage of the targeted community was successfully helped or reached through the project or program. Please explain how goals will be met, including the parameters against which successes are measured).

Generally, grants are not made for the following purposes:

• Professional conferences
• Start ups less than 3 years old
• Deficit funding

* The Foundation does not award grants for political purposes or lobbying activities.

* Foundation support is not restricted to those organizations in support of or promoting the beliefs of a particular creed or denomination.

Applications must include a Grant Proposal Summary, as well as the following:

• A summary of the organizations history and description of existing services. (If applicable, please include website address, mission statement, number of staff members and volunteers, current population served, any accomplishments, etc.)
• An explanation of the proposed project stating the need for the program, its components and logistics, as well as the demographic expected to benefit.
• The specific dollar amount requested and the date payment is preferred.
• A list of all other possible donors asked for financial support of the program and commitments to date.
• The project budget, including expenses and any income.
• A description of how the project will be supported upon completion of the grant period.
• An outline of how the program will be evaluated. (Stating goals and when they are to be met, ways the progress and success of the program will be measured.)
• Board of Directors list.
• The Organization's operating budget, including financial statements from the past 3 years.
• A copy of the most recent letter from the Internal Revenue Service verifying tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and classification as not a private foundation.

Grant applications may be submitted by mail or via the Internet. If submitting an application electronically, the Foundation cannot guarantee confidentiality of information. If this is a concern, a downloadable application form is available.

If submitting an application by mail, please do not send binders or notebooks. Questions are welcomed at anytime; however please do not ask for grant critiques or any pre-decision comments.

Grant applications are considered two times per year, May with payment no later than June 30, and October with payment no later than November 30. Applications to be considered in May must be submitted by April 15 and by September 15 for consideration in October. Early submission is encouraged. The Foundation endeavors to respond on grants both approved and those declined as quickly as possible after its May and October meetings. Unless declined, applications submitted by April 15 remain as grant candidates for November funding. An organization may submit a request for funding only once per calendar year, regardless of whether or not funds are awarded.

Grants will be made only to those organizations, which, in the sole judgment of the Foundation, conduct activities falling within the focus areas of funding for the Foundation. The Board of Directors is responsible for the approval of each grant. Because the Foundation receives numerous requests for funding, not all projects/programs can be approved. A decision not to support a proposal has no bearing on the merits of the applicant or the proposal.

Upon approval, the Foundation requests to be recognized as an anonymous donor unless specific permission has been given.
